Intro to Halcyon’s BESS Tracker
Halcyon's BESS Tracker compiles information on newly proposed, in development, and under construction battery energy storage systems across the United States. The dataset consolidates key project details into a structured, research-ready dataset, drawing from state public utility commission (PUC/PSC), regional grid operator (ISO/RTO), and Federal Energy Regulatory Commission dockets, as well as U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) datasets.
Each project entry captures essential attributes such as docket numbers, project names, capacity, size, duration, technology type, development milestones, planned operating year, point-of-interconnection, and developers. Where available, the dataset includes granular details such as parent company, contracted capacity, relationship to data centers, battery manufacturer, cost figures, behind-the-meter, co-location specifics, and inverter make and model.
Human-in-the-loop
Halcyon's analysts use AI-assisted search to identify relevant filings, and each data point is validated by subject-matter experts. The result is a uniquely reliable resource for understanding the scale, timing, and characteristics of upcoming battery storage across the U.S. electricity landscape.
Halcyon updates the Grid to incorporate new projects weekly and updates already tracked projects on a monthly basis as information becomes available.
More information you would like to know across all projects?
Subscribers can add new columns to tease out details for their bespoke purpose. Choose from one or two words, a short phrase, a few sentences, dates, years, whole number, decimal number, or true/false to fetch the information in the format of your choosing.
The more verbose your question, the better. As our head of engineering likes to remind us, robots do best when instructed explicitly, “do what I say, not what I mean.”

Data Handling
To standardize information for convenient interpretation in the dataset, Halcyon converts some information into normalized formats. This is only done for clarity, never to “fudge” information. Halcyon’s #1 goal is to faithfully represent information presented in the regulatory record.
Type / Field | Description |
Dates | Construction and commercial operation date are often disclosed as quarterly periods (e.g., “Q3 2026”). Halcyon converts these to dates based on the last day of the period (e.g., “Q3 2026” → “September 30, 2026”) |
Coordinates | Halcyon provides latitude and longitude coordinates only when they are disclosed precisely. If the degrees-minutes-seconds (or decimal version) are disclosed in the regulatory record, we capture them. If the street address is provided, we approximate coordinates based on that address. But if the project’s location is only known to a city, county, or other high-level, then the Coordinates field is left blank. |
Verified but not Cited | As of September 2026, Halcyon does not yet support citations to authoritative tabular sources such as the EIA 860, ERCOT interconnection queue xlsx, etc. Halcyon’s BESS Tracker includes information from those sources, such as developers, commercial operation dates, and more. These cells have no-citations but are verified with the source. |
